Question 2: GIDDY UP. The theme of our school costume gala is “Country” and that same weekend I have tickets to BEYONCE. So! This Midwest-born, West Coast-dwelling girl has to head south. Hoping to find pieces that work for both, though the concert will be much sparklier than the school event. This is LA, however, and our school tends to go BIG with their looks. (Last year the theme was 20s and I went full flapper, headband and all.)

I have a clearer sense of Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter aesthetic. The “country” theme for school feels VERY broad. My sister Carolyn, who lives in TN, and I started swapping inspo pics of a young Dolly Parton. A friend offered up Patsy Cline, too. I am planning to buy secondhand here in LA or online, but if there are any brands I should look for or colors/styles/silhouettes, that would be so helpful. THANK YOU!

I second this! We have a wedding to attend next weekend and the welcome reception is western chic. Bought myself a pair of the Tecovas Loretta in saddle cowhide. Have been wearing them to break them in but to my surprise and delight, they need no breaking in. I’ve still been wearing them though 😅 Comfortable from the first moment I put my feet in them. I live in Atlanta where spring has already arrived so it has been my go to with dresses and a light jacket. You do have to size down. I am normally 8.5 and the 8 is perfect. And I’ll certainly be wearing them to see Beyoncé later this year!

WESTERN CHIC. What a dress code! I love that. Can I ask, do you wear them with jeans? And if so, is this like a skinny jean moment where you tuck them in? I figure if I'm getting boots I want them to show.

Montana perspective: Only tuck jeans into boots if the boots are highly decorative on the shaft and the jeans are truly skinny (like bordering on jegging). If you want to show off the boot, steer toward a dress or skirt because there's always someone who scoffs at tucked in jeans (and people have STRONG feelings on this one 🙄).

Maybe look into duster cardigans - they're versatile and can be worn with jeans or over a sequin skirt/dress. Something like this?

I don’t tuck jeans into boots. I have a short pair and wear them with longer shorts and longer dresses and skirts as well as boot cut or mid to wide leg jeans. They are very comfortable- the short ones are designed to slip up and down so they do take some getting used to. Tecova makes no- show socks designed to wear with them.

I think the short Tecovas would be cute with a Nap Dress, maybe styled with a denim jacket or barn coat, and maybe some turquoise jewelry

I have not worn them with jeans but I think they’d fit over skinny jeans. There’s room in the boot shaft. My dresses are usually midi length so they still show some. People can def tell they’re cowboy boots because I’ve gotten comments (in the best way).

Jumping on the Tecovas train here!…I’m an Orange County transplant and have now been living in Austin for 20 years…and somehow just bought my first pair of boots today and went with Tecovas! Got the Annie in “fawn” suede (“cafe” goat was a close second) and I’m in love. So comfortable already. I’m a size 8 and got a size 7. Was advised to go at least a half size smaller but the suede and goat stretch out quite a bit so the full size down was recommended. Planning to wear mostly with dresses and skirts. Going to be on the hunt for boot cut jeans!

My first question is about SWIMSUITS! 👙 Where are we buying our swimsuits? I had one for years I *loved* from J.Crew but it’s finally given up. I also still like the wrap styles I have from Summersault. But could use a new one or two for our trip.

On the hunt now for two different types: A low-cut long torso one piece, ideally in a print (why are so many bathing suits solids??) as well as a high-waisted two piece with a triangle or plunge top. Also in a print! Tempted to mix-and-match the way Leslie Bibb’s character does on White Lotus. Oh, and also: full bum coverage, always. 🙃

Recently I've been buying my swimsuits from Faithful The Brand https://faithfullthebrand.com/collections/swim Definitely a range of coverage options, and the price point can feel a bit high but they work with artists in Indonesia for their prints and are a BCorp and the suits I have are a great material/thickness. Runs a bit small, but that feels typical of Australian sizing. They have some fun prints that could likely be mix and matched white lotus style!

This discussion could not come at a better time. I need ideas/suggestions/inspiration for a wedding I’m attending this summer. The details: Italy, Amalfi Coast, in July; dress code is black tie. I’m looking to spend $400-$500 max (because the wedding is overseas and I’m traveling with a friend for a week before, something like rent the runway isn’t an option—champagne problems, I know). Two things that can make shopping challenging: I’m short, so dresses need to either be petite, easily tailored or midi length (which will be full length on me!) and have a large chest, so nothing strapless or backless. Help!!!

Expand full comment
Elizabeth Holmes's avatar

SARAH. This sounds SO FUN. I love this for you! Amalfi Coast black tie is such a good combo, it's dressy but relaxed (if that makes sense lol). To keep it dressy enough, maybe steer clear of cotton/linen fabrics and go for something like silk or satin? Prints can be tricky with black tie but I think it can absolutely work for the Amalfi coast. And I'd say the location calls for flowy vs more structured but tbqh either could work.

Brands that came to mind: Farm Rio and RIXO. Also, have you ever shopped at Tuckernuck? I am new to the retailer (after seeing their ads allllll over the internet). They carry a mix of outside designers as well as having their own Tuckernuck brand. The latter is right in your price point, with some very fun dresses under $400. Check out their "cocktail" edit under dresses right now, which I would say is dressier than most cocktail.

Please let us know what you get! x

I just went through this for a spring black tie wedding with a floral twist on the dress code. What I learned: for it to be considered black tie, a dress has to have a structured bodice / top and be floor length. Where I found most success was with Mac Duggal. The dresses are around $400-600 (just slightly above your price range). But, the top offers support for a larger chest. I ended up with a one shoulder dress that has a bustier inside and feels supported. Also, buy it through Nordstrom - they have free returns so you can order them in multiple sizes and they’ll do alterations for you.

What do I wear to be the maid of honor at my best friend’s wedding in May in Charleston? No requirements from the bride at all, my heart says Self Portrait but my body says size 20 and pregnant enough to be chunky around the middle but not pregnant enough for a cute bump or maternity clothing. Up to $500.

Expand full comment
Elizabeth Holmes's avatar

Congratulations, Fiona!! Self Portrait dresses are beautiful but I would not recommend them for pregnancy / changing bodies - I find them to be VERY fitted.

A few more Qs for you: Do you want solid or print? Long or short? Sleeves or no? When I hear Charleston in springtime, I think flowy and colorful. But I know that in-between stage in pregnancy can be tricky in terms of finding something you feel comfortable in.

Expand full comment
Fiona's avatar

Open to solid or a print, but if a print like a soft one I don’t want to go bright and tropical. Knee to midi length, not strapless but any sleeve up to short is fine. And I love the self portrait look but they only go up to size 12 so not an option pregnant or not! I’d like to look like I could rewear the dress to Ascot.

Expand full comment
Elizabeth Holmes's avatar

Ascot! The perfect style direction. And agree on going for something in a softer palette. Do you like Hobbs? That's one brand I love for this sort of thing - the Willa dress is gorgeous (and not just because it's light blue lol), so is the Faye.

Not quite as structured as those but J.Crew has a collection dress that is soft and pink and flowy and fun (they don't name their styles but it's called the "Collection ruffle-trim midi dress in crinkle cupro.")

Was browsing around Nordstrom (which always has a solid wedding guest assortment) and came across the brand Mac Duggal. Loving the softness here! And something with an empire waist offers a lot of flexibility for post-pregnancy wear, too. https://www.nordstrom.com/s/empire-waist-embellished-short-sleeve-dress/8260537

I am touring Greece for ten days in May. We will be visiting a lot of historical sites, and will spend four days 'island hopping' on the Mediterranean. This is a historical /biblical sites tour, where my husband and I will be some of the youngest people participating. I want comfortable, lightweight dresses that can withstand walking and being packed tightly in a suitcase. We have heard that the culture is casual but not sloppy, as the Greek people take pride in looking nice. I can't afford a new wardrobe, so a couple of versatile dresses would be great. Also, recommendations on shoes!! THis is always such a fun comment section, so thank you.

Hi Leah! What a fun trip. Can you give me a rough budget for how much you want to spend on a dress? Shirt dresses work well in these scenarios, I've found, because you can dress them up or down depending on the day. Also, linen pants! They can roll up nicely and you can pair with a fitted ribbed tank or t-shirt. Old Navy has some great options right now.

For shoes, I think you could get away with white sneakers. I would recommend leather so you can wipe them off easily (rather than canvas, which can be tricker to clean).

As Oprah's huge special on menopause is about to air tonight, I, as an older woman, am wondering how to style my clothes. I want to look stylish, but my physical shape has changed with menopause and my flat tummy has been replaced by a roundish one. I am in good shape, exercise almost daily, and eat well, but there is no escaping that tummy. So many tops accentuate the tummy rather than obscure it, and I don't want to always be wearing a sweatshirt or a sweater. Dresses are not even in the conversation anymore. Have you tried Banana Republic? They've stepped it up in recent years and I spent more than I wanted to on some ribbed tanks (always hard to spend $$ on basics). But have LOVED them. Bought the Target version, too, and always always reach for the BR ones. Has been a little reminder to myself that sometimes spending a bit more is worth it. Good luck with the new role!
