Can I just say I'm excited to see what she wears on inauguration day and that night? I know I maybe getting a tad bit ahead of myself. But I am genuinely excited and relieved for our future.

Love this!! Thank you for covering Kamala’s style. 100% what she says and does is most important, but there’s so much that can be subtly said through clothes. I know you will carefully and respectfully discuss her style and I appreciate that!

Interesting, I just read a different analysis of Kamala's style from the Washington Post that stood in somewhat complete contrast to your/Hitha's interpretations particularly of the pearls + designers of color (Gift link if you want to read! 🔗 https://wapo.st/46CBZpL)

The Post's analysis suggests that Kamala may be strategically *avoiding* "identity dressing" (wearing designers whose backgrounds tie in with her own) because it's so common among celebrities and political figures today and because she doesn't want her wardrobe to steal focus. Instead, just as she's sharpened her political power in the last year, she's also quietly tweaked her wardrobe in a way that just sends a message that she's most confident when she's put together and in control.

The fact that their takeaway is completely different underscores how much this is an art in addition to a science — and why it's so fascinating to analyze and discuss!

As a follow-up, I'd love your thoughts on why we're seeing such a different reaction to Kamala as a candidate compared to Hillary, even in terms of style. Kamala seems to echo some of Hillary's fashion choices — wearing pantsuits almost as a uniform, wearing purple to signify unity, wearing white in symbolic moments — and yet she doesn't seem to catch any of the same criticism. I see it as progress, but I'm still wondering about the "why!"

Does Kamala ever wear dresses? Is there a place for dresses in politics anymore?

Hi Suzy, it's a great Q! VP Harris wore a dress on inauguration day in 2021. She has also worn dresses and/or skirts at times, like state dinners or the White House Correspondents Dinner. But mostly she favors trousers.
