I am so glad that you have gotten to cover Invictus. It is so sad to continue seeing the negative press these two get just for breathing at times, when they are clearly doing meaningful and wonderful work. How many people have to say that their lives have been changed by Invictus or H and M are truly wonderful people who care before the narrative will change?! I am so thankful for journalists like you that are spreading the positivity.
It's such a great point - it saddens me on a very deep level that good news will never spread as far as negative spins. Take Meghan leaving when she did, that was always the plan. I knew that going in, and understood exactly why - because of the kids. Plus, it's what she did at an earlier games. And yet in Canada there was a breaking news alert about it by one of the UK pubs saying Meghan "cuts her trip short" to go home "without Harry." I know this is naive at this point, but I couldn't believe it.
+1 to everything that Keisha (and other commenters below) said here.
Elizabeth, do you have any ideas about how Meghan and Harry could combat the negative press, specifically leveraging/spreading the word about the Invictus Games? This seems like something that (I hope) most folks would be heartened by.
What a delight to see your coverage of the games, Elizabeth! Seeing Harry and Meghan show such kindness and that they took the time to really hear the stories of the competitors and their families was so lovely. It brightened my week to read about people coming together to encourage each other and make a positive impact in the world. Well done!
Thank you, Kelly! It really was a bright spot in these troubling times - I talked to a lot more people than I quoted here and everybody (really truly everybody) said nice things about the games and H&M.
Thank you for all your detailed coverage of this very special event. Harry and Megan seem so warm and delightful. The relentless negativity by the British press breaks my heart. I wish every happiness for them. Thanks for taking us along !
I’m so happy for you, Elizabeth! You have worked so hard to honor them as well as your role as a journalist and that is honorable and commendable. I truly hope it bodes well for you in the future as you continue to cover them.
Loved following along with your coverage of Invictus, Elizabeth! How fun that you had a moment with Meghan! Looking forward to more fantastic coverage! 😊👏🏻
I’m so happy for you that you got to go and cover this. What an amazing opportunity! I agree it is a beautiful and needed thing Harry has built with Invictus. Thank you for sharing with us!
I can’t like this newsletter more! I’m so excited for you, and I can’t believe she recognized you. 😍 Keep up the amazing work. It has been so fun following your coverage.
I am so grateful to have your perspective and storytelling of this fabulous event. One can see how life-changing these games are to the athletes and their families -- and also the deep happiness and sense of purpose they seem to provide for Harry. I have two questions. 1) Was this your first personal interaction with M? (MEEEEP!) 2) Were you invited to the tubing event or was it a happy accident that you were the only journalist there? Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions. It is exciting to witness everything through your eyes.
Hi Sandie, no, it was not the first time. I promise I’m not trying to be coy about it! But in these moments I have my reporter hat on. Between two Invictus trips and the two days I spent at the bookstore in Summerland, I’ve been able to be in the same spaces as the Sussexes. They are — as most public figures would be — aware who is there covering them. Invictus press pack is quite big but we were there over several days (and now two years in a row). I was part of a group of familiar writers and photographers.
I am thrilled to hear this. As you touched up on in your post, M&H get so much undeserved poor press. I am relieved to know they also have good people in the press surrounding them. Thank you.
Hadn't thought of the connection in that way, but makes sense. Was it similar on the campaign trail? Did Romney/McCain know who you were, or at least recognize you?
"“How are you?” Meghan asked warmly. “I’m so glad you came back.”" A dream interaction!! (and also recognize much work on your end that you make look fun on IG). Thank you for sharing your experiences with us! It's been the highlight of my last few days looking at your coverage
What an incredible experience for you Elizabeth, especially after the month you have had. As a journalist myself, how organized was the media aspect of it compared to other things you have covered in politics and for the royal family?
This is a great question. I've done this for long enough, and in enough different settings, that it all sort of tracked. The mix of very organized plans (PDF recaps, itineraries, links to photos, etc) with a sprinkle of utter chaos when it comes to executing something on this scale — it was all very familiar to me! Reminded me of my campaign trail days. There were moments of frustration, for sure, especially when things weren't clear about where to be or if we had a lot of down time. But there were a lot of people trying to make things happen, and for that I am grateful (for example, shoutout to a gentleman named Rich, who was doing the most to get us a clear view at biathlon).
I am so happy for you Elizabeth! I love how you bring professional journalist, love of fashion and style, as well as integrity with heart to everything you do. I loved all of your coverage of this event. Also great to see you smiling as you obviously Love what you do. 🎉
