I appreciate William's line about the relevance of etiquette in the modern world in which he said, "It is about civility and respect and compassion," because as we all know, and as you and William discussed, the internet/social media world that we live in today is TRULY missing those aspects. (Which is part of what has led us all here to this discussion format!) I also thought it was so thoughtful of William to include nuances like Harry, Meghan, and Andrew in his book, since there is so much speculation circulating the internet regarding them. I'll definitely have to check out "Just Good Manners!"
I love this so much! I am etiquette-obsessed and have given serious thought to taking the William’s train the trainer course to start my own business. ❤️ Etiquette is helps us all get along and live in a civilized society! It’s 100% about demonstrating respect to everyone.
This is funny timing — given I’ve started my own journey into learning (or re-learning) etiquette through Emily Post. What really compels me about her advice in the past, and that of the modern work of her descendants of the Emily Post Institute, is that ultimately etiquette is about being kind to others and putting them at ease around you. I began to notice my own selfishness and unfeeling ways more when I read her words, even if the social situations she prescribed differ vastly from my life, the essence was the same! It’s been great food for thought even if my husband is tired of hearing “Emily says…” :)
I'm very out of practice but also taught etiquette to younger children for part of an activity one of my organizations did each year. I very much enjoyed it at the time. I learned from my grandmothers, though I don't think they ever felt the need to teach my brothers or male cousins. I think that is probably my biggest critique of etiquette, especially in America. So often it feels as though "proper" etiquette is just another way to enforce gender norms and forced gender roles on women.
I’ve been a fan of William Hanson for the last couple of years! My biggest pet peeve lately is people who watch videos on their phones in public places with the volume turned up! Obviously they don’t follow William!
Growing up- my Sisters and I, all attended a 6 week course referred to as "White Gloves & Party Manners". We learned how to address our Elders, how to Enter a Room, how to Sit Properly, how to Set a Dining Table, how to Shake someone's hand (& look directly at them)...and so much more. All of which has benefitted me throughout my life (& certainly my career). As a very wise person once said- "Manners make life more comfortable for everyone..."... Etiquette and Manners help us to know how to treat others respectively and appropriately. I highly recommend them!
I miss dressing up as well! I always “had an excuse” when I was working. But now I hardly ever go anywhere but the grocery store. How fun that you were able to attend the reunion with your colleagues!
I will always argue in favor of etiquette, particularly when guided by the foundational part of it all, the golden rule of doing unto others as we’d like done for us. Actions rooted in etiquette show respect to others ♥️
My dad went to culinary school and taught us how to set a table, which has come in very handy. I love everyone’s suggestions to keep learning more about etiquette and manners in our ever-evolving world.
What a timely topic! Since we’ve seen more people returning to office (fed employee here), it’s been interesting to see and experience new norms and the etiquette (or lack of). I’ll be sure to follow him now for more insight!
I still have a worn and faded (and likely really outdated) cookbook that belonged to my grandmother tucked away in the kitchen cupboard. It has a page bookmarked in the back with a complete table setting diagram. Setting the table was my chore in childhood and I remember pulling it out quite often since we had plenty of family holiday meals in our formal dining room. While I can’t remember the last time I actually used it in my adult years, recalling that information has come in very handy at fancy restaurant and events. I really enjoyed reading your conversation.
I would love a book on modern etiquette for Teams/Zoom meetings. I keep wondering if there is an official "rule" for sipping a hot drink when on camera.
Obsessed with this whole convo especially the most killer line “Catherine is more royal that most of the royals put together”.
Letting women exit an elevator first maybe be outdated but to me shows that a man know proper etiquette 😉
I selected your name at random, Erica — congratulations! More information is in your inbox. :)
I’m so excited to read this book, thank you!

Woohoo! Can't wait to read it! Thanks so much :)

I love the thought “Our clothes inform how we are thinking.” That is a useful tip to get in the mindset to do something

I used to work in a tea parlor and after a few years, I got the opportunity to teach the children's etiquette classes! It was such fun!

I love the clothing forming our mindset sentiment. It’s not something I would have thought of on my own, but I can’t not see it now!

I did a little scrolling through William's Instagram reels as a result of this conversation, and he has some good tips for virtual meetings!
