The Democratic National Convention wrapped up a four-day takeover of Chicago and — wow! — the vibes were high. Even from afar, the sense of seizing the moment after this summer’s dramatic change to the top of the ticket was palpable. The fashion on stage met the moment, with many convention speakers making their time in the spotlight a bit brighter thanks to a standout outfit.
Below you will find my SMTs from the week (short for So many thoughts, my Instagram fashion commentary) on Vice President Kamala Harris, former First Lady Michelle Obama, and the Walz family. First, a shoutout to five others who chose their attire carefully. I focused on elected officials and first ladies here as the stakes feel higher for them. (But I see you, Ella Emhoff! CNN has coverage of her looks here.)
As I explored in my reaction to Harris’s speech outfit, this is a complicated conversation. Fashion is a burden placed disproportionately on women and often a source of criticism. And also, I believe what one wears an opportunity for attention, personal expression and connection with others. Let’s make sure to hold those two competing ideas as we watch this campaign unfold, ok? And finally, because what someone says (and does) is always the most important, I’ve included links to each of their speeches, too.
💭 I would love to talk about DNC style with you — who was your fave! — and, more broadly, how you feel about discussing the fashion of public figures. Please click below to share your thoughts in the comments.
